Causeway Bay History and Heritage Series’ is a one-year project funded by the Built Heritage Conservation Fund of Development Bureau. Presented by Po Leung Kuk Museum, the project comprises a youth community docent training programme and a heritage fun day. We hope to connect historic buildings in Causeway Bay and nearby area, compile their stories and display hidden cultural treasures using creative means by our youth to raise public awareness in historic buildings and conservation.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

The Built Heritage Conservation Fund<\/h2>\n

The Built Heritage Conservation Fund was established in 2016 to provide subsidies for public education, community involvement and publicity activities, and academic research apart from covering certain existing government initiatives and activities on built heritage conservation including the Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme and the Financial Assistance for Maintenance Scheme.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n

In the late 19th\u00a0Century, abduction and trafficking of women and children were serious crimes in Hong Kong. On 8th\u00a0November, 1878, a group of local Chinese presented a petition to the Governor, Sir John Pope Hennessy, K.C.M.G., to set up Po Leung Kuk to rescue the kidnapped victims. The \u201cSociety for the Protection of Women and Children\u201d was approved by the Hong Kong Governor in May, 1880, but as the petition was submitted on 8th November, 1878, that date was adopted as our founding date.<\/p>\n

“Po Leung”, translating literally as protection of the young and the innocent, represents the core vision of our organisation. Formally established as the Society for the Protection of Women and Children in 1880, in our long history we have prevented and resolved kidnappings, protected destitute women and children, and assisted the Secretary for Chinese Affairs (under British Rule) as a mediator in complex family and marriage disputes.<\/p>\n

In line with the economic development of Hong Kong over the past century, the range of services and coverage we provided to the community constantly expanded as welfare needs evolved. Today, we are Hong Kong\u2019s leading social service organisation and fundraiser. Under a modern corporatised management structure, we are able to utilise donation dollars to maximize the returns to our most important stakeholder \u2013 the community.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n\n

\n Po Leung Kuk Main Building<\/span>\n <\/h3>\n\n <\/div>\n

The Po Leung Kuk Main Building was designed by Mr. IU Tak-chung, one of the earliest Chinese modern architects in Hong Kong and director of Po Leung Kuk. Completed in 1932, the building is in Neo-Classical architectural style. The dome on top symbolises power and public authority, echoing with the broad public acceptance and support enjoyed by Po Leung Kuk. In 1950s, a portico was constructed to the main entrance for sheltering people from the elements. The architectural concept can be traced back to Ancient Rome and was often found in designs of temples and public buildings. The columns are modelled after western classical architectural features, but also feature inscribed couplets from Chinese culture. The building is one of Mr. IU’s final designs, yet it has been the home of destitute women and children. It is also the headquarters where important decisions are made, and charity traditions are carried forward by directors and fellows. Located in Causeway Bay, the Main Building has been a testament to the development of Kuk’s work in the district.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n
